So if you're going camping, does that mean you won't be doing the web comic thing in mile end?

I second the motion on wearing layers -- it really is the best thing. Two or three shirts, a sweatshirt, and a jacket. And it would hurt to wear long johns or biking pants under your jeans. And a hat and gloves.

I would sometimes put a brick in the campfire to get it nice and toasty, and then wrap it in a towel and put it in the foot of my sleeping bag when I went to bed. It helps a lot, but make sure you wrap it good so it doesn't burn your bag.

Not cheap, but when I went to the arctic I bought some merinho wool underwear - top and full length leggins - from Rohan - they're brilliant - and now that i live in the countryside in a house with no heating, they serve well as pyjamas too. I'm sure M&S do something similar - well worth it, I think. Have fun.

I recommend that you wear EVERYTHING you packed at night...including two pairs of gloves and a wooly hat. Last time I camped in March I barely slept the first night because I was so cold. The second night was better after I went out and bought a Nalgene bottle that I could fill with hot water and keep in my sleeping bag at night. But any old hot water bottle would do -- naturally.

Enjoy your trip!

The solution is simple! Wear ALL your clothes at the same time. Many layers wins!

Alternatively there's an Army surplus place on Kilburn High St which should be cheap and if its ok for the army its probably ok for anyone :)
